GEAR UP Wyoming is looking for two motivated individuals to serve through AmeriCorps VISTA to develop mentor and/or tutoring programs, build connections in the community and strengthen programs to help students graduate from high school and college. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Authorized in 1964 and founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993. VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years. What VISTA Members Do VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, you?ll create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. The Benefits of VISTA Service By serving through VISTA, you?ll gain new skills, friends, and experiences?plus you?ll get the satisfaction that comes from helping others. During your service, you?ll also receive a modest living allowance, health care, and other benefits. And, upon completing your service, you can choose to receive either a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.
What We Do
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally-funded, statewide grant in Wyoming that provides services to 2,000 seventh through twelfth grade, income-eligible students each year. The GEAR UP goal of increasing the number of eligible students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education is accomplished by: ? providing academic support, college preparation, and family services through our GEAR UP offices located in each of the seven community colleges in Wyoming. ? providing educator training and school improvement initiatives through a partnership with the Wyoming Department of Education.
