The Cheyenne CAP Composite Squadron is called a “Composite” squadron because its members are made up of both senior members and cadets.
In performing our “Emergency Services” mission, our members have the opportunity to qualify as Search and Rescue (SAR) aircrew members or ground team members. The Air Force may task us to locate missing people or take photos of areas damaged by natural disasters. The Wyoming CAP units fly the Cessna 182, which is equipped to operate out of high altitude airports. Aircrew positions consist of Pilot, Mission Observer, and Scanner. Our SAR ground team members locate their assigned targets using ground vehicles, radios, sensor/tracking devices or may be directed to a location by our aircrew.
Our “Aerospace Education” mission is both to educate our CAP cadets and form a partnership with the Cheyenne Educational system to get teachers involved in the teaching of aerospace concepts. Our squadron is currently using two Microsoft Flight Simulator Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) kits to develop a flight ground and simulator training program to help our cadets learn the basics of flying an airplane. These flight training tools and our CAP instructor pilots offer our cadets a low-cost option for pursuing their Private Pilot license. Our cadets are also in the process of constructing a robotic arm.
Our “Cadet Program” is instrumental in giving our cadets the opportunity to mature into aerospace leaders through activities such as wearing a uniform, drill, instructing other cadets, participating on teams, physical fitness, and filling cadet leadership positions. Cadets are also challenged with the opportunity to complete achievement levels that lead to higher cadet rank and increased responsibility. Cadets start out as an Airman Basic and have the opportunity to progress to Cadet Colonel. Cadets also have the opportunity to attend special activities such as orientation rides in gliders/airplanes or longer duration events such as Encampment.
