Who We Are
Volunteer or Give: The kindness and generosity in giving of your time, talents and donations is an important part of the quality health care we provide our American “Heroes”. At the Sheridan VA Healthcare System (SVAHCS), you will be part of a health care team that is responsible for providing exceptional services to our veterans.
“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” – Mother Teresa
Volunteering: Volunteering is about giving your time to a good cause; it’s a gift anyone can give. It has no cost, and it can be tremendously powerful. You get the chance to use your talents, develop new skills, and experience the pleasure that comes from making a real difference in a Veteran’s life.
If you have a desire to volunteer or make a donation of any kind, please contact the Sheridan VA Healthcare System’s Volunteer Program. We would be honored to speak with you about our volunteer application and donation processes and how you can help us in our dedicated mission to provide comfort and care to America’s Veterans. Please call us today or contact us by e-mail at SHEVoluntary@va.gov.
What We Do
Since April 1922, the Sheridan VA Healthcare System has been a mental health care and primary care facility for veterans. In 1898 the grounds that are now the Sheridan VA Healthcare System facility were set aside by President William McKinley as a military fort. The fort was named after Brigadier General Ranald Slidell Mackenzie. The first troops to the fort in 1901 were Buffalo Soldiers who used the fort for rest and retraining. By World War I, the fort was closed and ready for demolition. However, after leaving office, former President Taft was appointed to the Supreme Court and transferred it to the Bureau of Health as a hospital for men coming home from World War I with battle fatigue or what is known today as PTSD. The hospital opened in April of 1922 as a 300 bed facility. By the end of World War II the facility had 900 beds. Today the Sheridan VA Healthcare System has 208 beds and serves nearly 13,000 veterans yearly. The medical center boasts eight community based outpatient clinics, located strategically across Wyoming.
