What We Do

The Foster Grandparent Program is a volunteer program that offers seniors age 60 and older a paid non-taxable stipend to serve as mentors,tutors and caregivers for childeren and youth with special needs.Foster Grandparents serve 20 hours per week in community-based organizations such as elementary schools,hospitals,day care programs,after-school programs and Head Start programs. Foster Grandparents tutors elementry school students to improve reading skills,offer emotional support to children who have been abused and neglected,mento troubled teenagers and young mothers,and care for infants and children with physical and develpmental disabilities.in the process,they strengthen communities by proving youth services that community budgets cannot afford and by building bridges across generations. Foster Grandparents receive a modest tax-free stiped reimbursement for transportation,a daily meal during service,an anual physical examination,and accident and liability insurance while on duty.in addition to these benefits,the program gives participants the opportunity to share a lifetime of experience with youths,and join the half million older Americans who are strenghthening communities across the country as members of the National Senior service Corps.
