Who We Are
The Sheridan County Historical Society & Museum preserves and shares the history of life along the Bighorn Mountains and Western Powder River Basin. We are a member-run organization based in Sheridan, Wyoming. We started as the Sheridan County Chapter of the Wyoming State Historical Society in 1960. Soon after, we began collecting historically important objects, photographs, and documents for our area. In 2004, we opened our museum and today we serve over 4,000 people annually.
What We Do
The Historical Society and Museum is open year round with exhibits, programs, and projects. There is never a dull moment for us. Visitors can explore our museum in Sheridan any time during the year, although hours shift seasonally. During the spring and early summer, our staff creates rotating exhibits relating to local and regional events, people, or places. Behind the scenes our staff and volunteers catalog, photograph, and manage our growing collection of over 16,000 objects, photos, and documents.
We also sponsor and host a wide range of historical programs, talks, and tours for people of all ages. There are two or more free programs each month on our calendar of events. These range from our Casual Conversations in History for senior to the Tidbit Tuesday/Saturday programs for children. No matter your age or interest, there is something for everyone at the Sheridan County Historical Society & Museum.
