Who We Are

CAP is a nonprofit organization with squadrons in every state. We are an official auxiliary of the United States Air Force and follow their customs and courtesies. We have an active cadet program in the Big Horn Basin and meet weekly on Tuesday nights, with each meeting having a specific focus - leadership, character development, fitness, aerospace education and emergency services training. We live by 4 Core Values: Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence and Respect.

Cadets can join from age 12 to 18. Senior members can join at age 18 and above.  We are actively recruiting both cadets and senior members.  Currently, we have an urgent need for a senior member public affairs officer to help promote our squadron to the Big Horn Basin.  We also need adults wishing to work with cadets to develop their leadership and aerospace skills.

What We Do

Civil Air Patrol has 3 missions - cadet programs, emergency services and aerospace education. The Heart Mountain Squadron is a cadet focussed group where we work to develop the next generation of leaders who are knowledgeable in aerospace, emergency response, leadership skills and are also active in the community.

We are actively recruiting cadets for our cadet program and senior members to provide supervision, guidance and education to the cadets and help with administrative duties (personnel, administration, public affairs, supply, communications, and command).  Currently there is an urgent need for a public affairs officer to help promote CAP to the Big Horn Basin region.

We meet weekly on Tuesday nights at the Math/Science Building on the Northwest College Campus (room 104)  in Powell WY with a specific focus each week which includes: leadership, character development, aerospace education, and fitness.

In addition, we offer emergency services training. Cadets under 18 can train to be ground team members, radio operators, flight line marshallers and mission staff assistants.  Cadets 18 and older and senior members can train in those areas as well as mission aircrew members (pilots, observers, scanners), public affairs, safety officers and various other duties.

Cadets are expected to attend meetings regularly, promote through the Airman, Sergeant and Officer grades similar to the Air Force, wear their uniforms with pride and be active participants.  Since we are an auxiliary of the US Air Force we follow their guidance as to uniform wear, grooming, drill and customs and courtesies.  Cadets are not required to enter a branch of the military but if that is their future goal, CAP is a great way to be introduced to the military.

Cadets under the age of 18 can receive 5 powered orientation flights in our Cessna 182, based at the Powell airport.  5 glider flights are also offered when a glider is available.  Additional flight training can be obtained through CAP.

A week long encampment is held in the summer to further educate cadets about CAP.  Once encampment is completed, cadets have the opportunity to attend special activities hosted by various groups around the USA.  For more information please go to the CAP National website at:  https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/programs/cadets
